When you launch your email program and click the send and receive email button, your email program asks the email server to deliver any new email. Your email program then downloads the current messages and tells the email server to delete the messages on the server, since the email program now has a copy of the messages on your PC.

You can control the action of your email program by telling it to delete messages after they have been downloaded, or telling the server to keep a copy for a period of time.

It’s preferable to have your email program delete messages off of the server, because if you leave too many messages on the server your inbox will get too large and will cause performance problems with your email account.

I STRONGLY recommend deleting messages off of the server. Below are instructions for setting your email software to delete messages off of the server after downloading them.

Click on your account, usually named mail.yourdomain.com, then click the Properties button on the right. The mail.yourdomain.com properties appear.

Select the Advanced tab.

Under the Delivery section: Clear the check box Leave a copy of messages on the server if you do not need to save mail on the server. If you would like to leave messages on the server, please check the box Remove from server after, and click the arrows to specify the number of days or weeks emails should be saved. I recommend 14 days max, but you should never leave a copy of email on the server for more than 30 days.

To be able to interconnect a person’s social relationships online is the most valuable marketing opportunity to come from the viral adoption of social tools such as Facebook.

This will become a part of how we (as consumers) begin to make choices about the people and companies we choose to do business with.

Put simply, Instead of companies finding more about prospects, prospects will see who in their social network knows a good attorney.

We’ve done this for years informally, but now with the current online social tools the data is there to mine.

Imagine when a visitor can stop by any real estate agency or law firm’s website and bypass all the cute pictures and fluff filled bios and simply hit a button to see who in their LinkedIn of Facebook network knows any of these folks.

That day is here!

Furthermore, I truly believe that it will soon be a standard website feature.

As an example (to the right), the Colorado start-up Peep.ly (which is currently in private beta and launching in Fall 2010), is now demonstating its social surfing tools in action at Telluride Properties. Simply click the “Agent Match Link” in the navigation.

Can you see what a powerful tool this will be for someone shopping for Doctor, Real Estate Agent, Lawyer, Mechanic, Painter, Contractor, Web designer

Now With the click of a button they can search their own social networks and see which of the businesses they may already have a connections with.

This is going to drastically impact referral and lead generation.

Even if a business has only one employee they could easily offer this kind of functionality on their website, so that when someone refers them, a potential prospect could visit the web site and see who know who.

SiteDesignZ Web Design and Internet Marketing is dedicated to following these trends and keeping you informed of tomorrow’s online marketing tools.

Should you have any questions or interest in advancing your social network online so that you are positioned to take advantage of these coming trends, please feel free to call us today. 772-223-4707

Recently, I have been getting a lot of questions about using Facebook “pages” for business.

What is the difference from personal and business pages?
Is there any real benefit to using Facebook?
How do I get a Facebook page for my business?

I completely understand the confusion. Facebook is relatively new and there is a lot of information online…maybe too much. But I think this is a critical element to any small businesses marketing campaign and needs to be understood and implemented.

Here are a few of the questions, and my answers….

Why use Facebook for business?

FB has over 500 million users monthly

The average user has 130 friends

The average user spends one hour a day on the site

30 Million people become “fans” of a company’s facebook page each day

Over 60% of the world’s top retailers NOW have a facebook page

Perfect target with over 50% of users age 25 – 50

Facebook now 2nd most used search engine

I have a personal page…why do I need a business page?

     Facebook profiles

For individuals

ONLY accepted “friends” can see users pages

You only get one page. (standard tabs: Wall, Photo, Info etc.)

Limited to 5,000 friends

   Business Pages

Specifically for businesses or organizations

Visible to everyone

Pages are the ability to add new tabs and create page like a website

Many Pages ( Create custom designed pages that look like your website or brand)

Gets indexed in the Facebook search engine

(See examples below)

Should a Facebook Page replace my Website?

While a facebook page can be exactly like a website, it cannot and should not replace them. The biggest reason you will need both is that Google, Yahoo, Bing and ASK all DO NOT index facebook websites.

Google searches Websites

Facebook searches Facebook

They don’t cross…for now at least.

Who Manages the site?

Regular participation is key to the success of a Facebook fan/business page, so a small time commitment is imperative, although updating the page is relatively simple and easy to do.

Does SiteDesignZ offer Facebook Page Design?

Yes, actually SitedesignZ is one of only a very few web design companies that actually does offer this service.

What do you get?

2 Custom landing pages based on your brand or website.

I’ve been publishing inside the admin or WordPress (The Blog CMS this site runs on) and just recently thought I would try to use the Microsoft Word to WordPress publishing feature available in Word 07.

Setting up is pretty easy.

Click office button “new”
Select “New Blog Post”
In the setup, use the pull down to select “WordPress”

Enter your WordPress Admin URL with /
Enter your WordPress Admin login

THIS IS WHERE MOST MIGHT HAVE PROBLEMS

At this point, there is a trick in making it work that Microsoft does not tell you about. If you don’t do it you will get the dreaded “word cannot register your account blog” warning.

To fix this and get it to publish:

In the admin of your WordPress go to “Settings”
Click on “Writing”
Scroll down and check “XML-RPC” in the Remote Publishing features.

That’s it! From there, you are good to go with quickly publishing your blog articles from Word

Obviously this requires you to have a busienss page setup, which I will cover, but if you have one then set up TwitterFeed to connect to your personal account first. I know you wnat the business page, but for now, just use the personal. Once you have successfully hooked up the personal facebook page, you will see the dropdown that asks you to select the pages you manage in Facebook.. Simply select the page and you are DONE
